The french are very strict with baby meals. Zoé's pediatrician gave us a list of food and quantities that she's allowed to take and when (breakfast, lunch, dinner) until she was 12 months. After that, we sort of still followed the quantities but changed up the menu a bit.
Basically french babies are to be fed milk for breakfast, veggies and protein + yogurt for lunch, fruit, a biscuit, and some yogurt for snacks at 4pm, and veggies with a bit more carbs + yogurt or milk at dinner time.
So 4 meals a day. There's no 10 am snack or after dinner munching time. We're quite amazed that up to now, Zoé really does stick to that meal plan. She doesn't ask for any snacks if it's not the right time. And most importantly - she eats her veggies...most of the time.
Like any toddler, it's a one day she loves it, the next day she throws it on the floor kind of relationship with veggies. I always try to sneak in some veggies in what we eat and sometimes I get away with it. She never liked plain vegetables on her plate. It needs to either be hidden inside a quiche, mixed in in pasta sauce, or soup. One thing she mostly likes 90% of the time is soup.
Today for lunch I made chicken in mustard cream sauce and rice with green peas and baby carrots mixed in.
She ate all her chicken and then proceeded to separate the carrots and green peas and rice. She only ate the rice.
In short, I need help. I'm always always always on the look out for ideas to feed her the right amount of veggies. Luckily there's Google. Google is my best friend. There are a ton of sites with toddler recipes.
But some of them doesn't fit our lifestyle. Zoé's not into pita and hummus spread wraps. I tried - she threw the pita on the floor and grabbed a good hand sized part of a baguette and ate that with jam instead. And that night she ate 1/4 slice of homemade quiche.
So what to feed a picky french toddler with french tastes who has a Filipino mom who mostly eats rice and meat and a french/italian dad who only ever makes pasta?
Now that I have more time in my hands, maybe I'll challenge myself to really make nicer, healthier, kid friendly food. We are guilty of giving her pizza on nights when we are sooo tired to cook.
If you have any recipes you think I can try, please feel free to send me a message and I'll try to make it and let you know how it goes.
